Change Mac Software Update Server to a local server

If you are not using Client Management, use the defaults command in Terminal to point unmanaged client computers to a Software Update server. You must be an administrator to use the defaults command.

On the unmanaged client, open Terminal enter the following command:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/ CatalogURL

Substitute your Software Update Server’s fully qualified host name forĀ

You can verify your change using the following command:

defaults read /Library/Preferences/ CatalogURL

To point an unmanaged client computer back to the Apple Software Update server, use this command:

sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/ CatalogURL
